I would highly recommend the b234r engine, it is known as one of the strongest and best motors ever made by saab. I would do as what I just did and freshen the motor up so that it is basically a new engine. Put in new rod and main bearings, hone the cylinder walls, put in new piston rings, put in a new timing chain, guides, check the cam and crank gears, check the balance chain components, remove if you wish. Put in new rear main seals and maybe a timing chain tensioner and you have a brand new motor!!!
check your oil pump gears and if they are scrathced and scored, put in a new oil pump gear set. The 234r oil pump is thought to be better than the 235 as well... No real sludge issues with the b234r motor.
Put on your new head gasket and you are ready to roll...
All the normal break in procedures would apply to this freshened up motor and it will last a good 200k no problem :-)
That is my 2 cents,
John
