If your pump is below the water level it should be able to prime itself. I think the pump should be able to survive for a few minutes w/o water, but you may have damaged it anyway.
I was afraid of doing the same myself so I rigged up a simple indicator light off a float switch I installed in the washer fluid bottle. I got the switch for about 10 dollars on ebay and the light was about 2 dollars at radio shack.
