JUST from the change in tires alone is if the new tires are terrible quality or the additional grip is simply showing the suspension weaknesses better.
The stock size tire on a non-SPG 89 model is 185/65/15
The overall diameter difference between a 185/65/15 and a 205/60/15 is less than 1%(about two tenths of an inch). NO WAY is that going to make a substantial difference in handling except for the above mentioned possiblities.
I ran 205 60s on an SPG for many miles and very happily.
