To be more accurate it's the torque that kills the box - if you have 350bhp and big torque spike and you gun it everywhere then your stock box has short life. You could have 450bhp with a smooth and late torque delivery and the box would last longer.
My car gets driven hard only about 5% of it's mileage if that, so only had a slightly notchy 5th syncro by 150k miles.
The idea of fit and forget and to have 6th is nice though. Not sure what's the next weakest link? Maybe driveshafts.
