Bypass valve question, 88 SPG (longish)

I've recently bought an '88 SPG and have been replacing worn-out bits and installing simple bolt-ons. It has the SD stage4 APC with Ford 30# injectors,3.0bar fpr, Magnecor ignition cables. Performance was initially disappointing partly because the previous owner had messed with the timing to get the car smogged and partly because this is a California car anyway. But by improving timing it really picked up and boosted well into the red (triggered overboost cutout a few times too). Then I changed out the old and faulty bypass valve for a new one (see link below), billet aluminum, spring/piston, bigger, better, had to mount it on the outside of the intake hose to get it to fit. But performance immediately dropped badly - if I disconnect the vacuum hose to the BPV it is way better. I'm not a techie so can't figure what's wrong, but am willing to read and learn if anyone can explain what I need to do. I have 3 springs, red blue and yellow and have tried the blue and yellow with similar or same results.
