The weak link is the pistons. It is basically the same 2.3 that was used in the 9000 and is a solid engine. The issue is the piston rings were changed, as I understand it, in an attempt to make the engines warm up faster, so they would achieve better emissions. Probably the easiest solution is to swap the stock pistons for JE. Some tuners have changed the conrods, creating a 2.0 out of the 2.3, so you have a lower compression ratio and can run higher boost... see link below.
