Well if Shane happens to pass you at that speed while you're driving with your family on the autobahn and you take down his plate number and call it into the police, I'm sure they'll get a chuckle out of it. And there's nothing magical about the autobahn... it's just a strip of asphalt like thousands of others in the world, some of which are even in New Jersey!
You can say that drivers on the autobahn are better trained / more accustomed / have better vehicles etc. etc., but such things are only true in a statistical sense applied to large areas & populations, and not necessarily so in any specific circumstance. It's possible to be driving 150 MPH on the autobahn surrounded by dummies talking on cellphones just like you might find yourself driving on the NJ turnpike surrounded by F1 drivers in Porsches.
The last thing you said in your post is true: there's a time and a place. And the empirical evidence (the fact that Shane & friends completed their adventure without ill effect) would tend to indicate that the time and place where they did what they did was okay. The reality is that there are a number of complex factors that determine the outcome of any situation like this, and the reading on your speedometer is only one of them.
"Speed kills" is a wonderful saying if you're unable to grasp the concept of risk management beyond what can be expressed in two words, but I'd argue if that's the case you (generic "you", not you personally :^) ) shouldn't be driving at all!
