especially if the ethanol is produced locally. I'm in the Chicago area and Illinois is very big on corn and ethanol - Illinois is also the home to Arthur Daniels Midland, one of the largest ethanol producers in the US,if not the world. But E85 is currently priced only about 6.67% lower than regular gasoline and provides lower MPG, so it's about breakeven (yes, ethanol is higher octane, but I'm discussing cost of operation).
Note that my comment that I'm open to ideas on this is very true. I worked in Brazil for a couple of years, drove an ethanol powered car; there they make ethanol from sugar cane, which is a much more efficient process than corn with less effect on the food chain. I'm excited about the research that is going on for other plants or algae to use, but I don't see it coming while I still own my T5 car, a SAAB 9000!
