Nathan,
As the others have stated, between T7 and standalone, I'd definitely recommmend going with T5! ;^)
I've got quite a bit of experience fooling with Trionic systems (mostly T5) on Saabs, and recently acquired an Audi with Megasquirt so I've got experience with that too.
With MS or another standalone system, you're going to spend a fair amount of $$ for everything needed, and a lot of time getting everything dialed in. The lower-end systems (like Megasquirt) lack some significant features like sequential injection, and none have the most advanced features of Trionic like the direct ignition.
With Trionic, a little tuning will probably still be required but you'll get something much closer to correct out of the box.
The downside to both T5 and T7 is the crank-sensor signal that's required - the system will not work without that signal and you can't "fake" it. But if you can get a 60-2 trigger wheel made up and attached to the crank pulley and a VR sensor mounted in the right location, everything else will be easy.
Once that's done, either T7 or T5 could be used but the T5 system is simpler, much easier to tune, and works just about as well. And you can probably get a T5 ECU and other needed bits from a junkyard for less than the cost of the cheapest standalone system.
