There is something wrong. They wont make it sound any different.
I would guess slack in the chain when you timed it or something like that. Slotted cam is on the exhaust side? Never tried that but could barely run.
Leave any sensors unplugged?
Since the tensioner is on the back side of the motor you need to start timing on the exhaust cam with the chain tight. Crank pulley slot aligns with the middle of the two groves.
