Thanks Nick. "Easily" is a relative thing, I guess. I should say, I'm able to move it by hand... but not easily. The spring feels stout.

Turned out to be the vac hose from firewall to BPV had come loose. Wow did that cause a loud and haunting moan! Gone now. And I have boost.

But since you're reading this... Boost has dwindled a bit vs when the car was newer. Used to top out 75% into the yellow, now rarely exceeds 50% thru yellow... and it's a noticeable loss. I've replace BPV and the boost control valve (the one with vac hoses from turbo and to wastegate). Have not replaced wastegate. Have never replace plug wires, but replace plugs maybe 20k miles ago. Car is stock except for K&N cone filter. What would you recommend I check or replace?
