Performance DP versus factory DP Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Sun, 30 Jan 2011 09:36:25 In Reply to: Re: Phase I of P0420 elimination finally complete, Peter Martin [Profile/Gallery] , Sun, 30 Jan 2011 08:53:16 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The factory DP contains two catalytic converters and has a reputed life of over 150K miles. Any performance DP has a single catalytic converter of compact size. It is really a no-brainer that these performance DP's will have a shorter converter life than the factory pipe. I achieved 45K miles before the CEL started, for many owners that will be far longer than they own the car.
The theory behind use of these adapters is that they move the O2 sensor out of the exhaust stream. Since the software is looking for number of "hits" generated by each sensor, and comparing the front to rear to ensure the rear sensor is seeing fewer hits than the front, removing the rear sensor from the exhaust stream nearly guarantees the rear sensor will generate fewer "hits" than the front. Each "hit" is sometype of exhaust gas reading (oxygen in the exhaust stream seems logical) so equal readings front and rear mean the catalyst is not doing its job very well. There are some test results that indicate vehicle software is much too sensitive and even a catalyst alarming as low efficiency is still meeting the clean air standards.
The "right way" to fix this problem is to replace the catalyst in some manner, my Plan B approach. But with the age and mileage of my car, combined with no mandated emissions testing in Michigan, I am taking the cheap route for now.
A new factory DP is ~$1,100. A performance DP is $500 to $600. A large universal fit catalytic converter can likely be welded into the exhaust system for ~$300 (I don't have quotes yet but have priced the parts).
