This is a response to a thread from a few weeks back, wondering why some of us drive fast. I just returned from a two week vacation in Whitefish MT (from Mpls), and on the drive out, I drove fast; this is why.
I exited I-94 at Forseyth MT, and took Hwy 12 west to Hwy 89, which heads north to Glacier Park. Once I got past a little road construction on 12, the road opened up, and I took advantage of that opportunity. For the next 3+ hours, I averaged 110, I hit 145 a couple of times, 130 a bunch and the rest of the time was just cruising at high speed.
Tremendous sight lines, overcast skies (no glare), 44 degrees, and good roads. During one 55 mile stretch I did not encounter another vehicle, and over roughly 200 miles, I only counted 10, so traffic was non-existent.
The car was great at speed, especially around 110, where the car hunkered down, was rock solid, and confident. 145 was a little sketchy, the road was just bumpy enough to make me back off at that speed.
New tires helped too. Solid in the corners, and confident when pushed a bit.
On Hwy 89, between White Sulphur Springs and Great Falls, I went over a pass, where Showdown ski area sits. As I passed over the summit, slowing to look at the area, I thought that since there were no cars around, I would put the car in neutral and coast down, just to see how far I could go without being in gear. 9 miles later I had my answer. At one point hit 105, (which shows just how fast a runaway semi would go without brakes), and finally coasted into a small town where I had to put the car back into gear. I did not get a picture of the dash indicating 100 mph, with the tach showing idle rpm’s, maybe next time.
If other cars were around, I slowed to legal speeds, no exceptions, same with limited sight lines, but when the road was clear, and I could see beyond the next corner, I let er rip, with a huge grin, and this is why I drive fast.
