I did the 9000 brake upgrade on my '93 CE about three years ago, and am quite satisfied with the results. Having driven various 900's for over thirty years, this is the best setup I've driven. Brake response is smooth and firm, and, whether the result of the cryo treatment or a relatively light footed driving style, the wear after 30,000 miles has been negligible.
There are a few decisions to be made if you go this route (as opposed to performance rated 900 parts). The first regards calipers. New, rebuilt or junkyard salvage. New calipers are expensive and only available from ATE, the OEM supplier. Rebuilds are available, though comments on Saabnet seem to indicate questionable reliability. Salvage parts are likely to require rebuilding as well, somewhat offsetting the lower cost.
As mentioned, the upgrade only requires the front brake assembly to be replaced. If you are not replacing the rear calipers I would still suggest replacing the rotors and pads, just to start fresh at all corners. I also recommend cryo treating rotors and pads as this substantially increases the longevity of these parts.
Lastly, the 9000 front setup allows the use of (modified) BMW M3 brake pads, offering a wider variety of performance brake pads than available for Saab.
Stainless steel lines are useful in improving response by limiting expansion in the brake lines, which also helps offset the slightly larger volume of the 9000 calipers.
For further specifics, search the 900 board for "900 to 9000 brakes" or feel free to PM me.
Good luck.
