The main restriction of the stock placement is getting air to the turbocharger. At higher power ~above 350 or so the design of the stock manifold tends to back things up.
On my Viggen we were beating on a wall with the stock manifold trying a few inlet configurations and pleasantly surprised when we made a manifold with air straight in. SO we had gains on both sides. Instantly went from enough fuel for 11.0 up top to scary lean and time for bigger injectors. A nice power gain.
