Lessons learned with making a custom exhaust Posted by ryan [Email] (#2222) [Profile/Gallery] (more from ryan) on Wed, 17 Apr 2013 08:20:08 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Just some things I thought I'd share with you all. Back in January I was dumping a lot of money into my Viggen (JZW stage 4 tune, ETS intercooler, FPR, refinished wheels, new tires, new front suspension components, more), and needed to get at least a 2.5" exhaust following my GS V2 DP, for obvious reasons. In the quest to get this done with minimal cost, but not compromising quality, I added a magnaflow 3" muffler immediately followed by a dump tacked into that. I planned on driving this for a while and then finish routing it out to the back at a later date.
Here's the first problem: One 5" round Magnaflow IS REALLY LOUD. So I immediately order up another one (4" case OD... very slim) to insert upstream of it.... still very loud. I am calling BS on claims that turbos do quite a bit to muffle the exhaust for multiple reaons now... I would not factor your turbo into how quiet or loud you think your exhaust will be.
Being that I was annoying the hell out of my neighbors at 5:30am every morning, I got to work on planning on finishing the exhaust. I got a 3" in, 2x3" out muffler/tip combo from Vibrant Performance and more SS bends, and had it all put in. Now it's as quiet as my stock system! I would like it a bit louder, but then again, I'm driving a sleeper now, which is cool as well.
I hope this acts as a point of reference for those out there looking to do a custom system! One thing I learned is that the volume of a glass-pack muffler is very proportional to the noise reduction. If you get a small one, it's not going to do a whole lot!
