Just one more link in the performance chain, and a clumsy analysis without the proper proceedure. Having owned a n/a and Turbo 900's (both 1982 vintage), I've always wondered about the condition of my fuel injectors during operation. Both the Haynes book and the official Saab manual describe what to do to check them, but I never attempted to do so for one reason or another. It was mainly a matter of convincing myself I could do it properly. So just today I did the deed. I was genuinely surprised to find that the method described worked. And I could clearly see the results. The harsh truth is that I've been driving with two and a half futzy injectors! The ideal pattern being a visible spray vs. sputtering or a single thin jet. Ideally, the spray should exist under every condition of need, from the smallest amount during idle to WOT. Two of my injectors were sputtering under very light load conditions, then suddenly turn to mist only after a certain increased load point was reached. The third injector was intermitten as to sputter or mist. Fortunately, the fourth injector worked perfectly, and so I used that one to measure against the replacement injectors I've collected on my trips to various scrap yards. I now have four equally misting injectors, and I'll be guaging the results this evening.

I'm guessing improperly operating injectors has a lot to do with problematic issues such as the hunting idle syndrome, difficulty passing smog tests, engine knock during light load, less than ideal turbo boost performance...

Watching them operate visually was also very telling as to fuel consumption. The manner of cleaning the injectors (full pressure for long bursts) was also instructive. The fuel in the container afterwards was actually slightly cloudy. Also note that the piece of wire I used to jump the relay plugs would become very hot if I left it plugged in beyond 30 seconds. Be careful with the gas fumes too.
