A week or two ago, there was a long dialogue comparing APC tweaks, modifications, rewiring, etc. Participants included Kevin K and the pseudonymous "Tweaker," among others. Included in the post were links to a site which contained instructions for a several step modification to the stock APC (ie, removal of certain resistors and capacitors, replacement of one resistor with another, etc). Having a spare APC box lying around courtesy of my many-years-ago "upgrade" to the Saab "Performance" Red Box for my 87 SPG, and having finally reached the point where the Kevin K-tweaked red box and other mods were not enough, I decided to gamble and try the modifications.

At this point, I'm still fine-tuning the pots, but I can't resist posting results observed. Let me summarize what I've observed since Saturday afternoon's little project. In a word:

WOW!!!!!!!

I still have boost taper with revs over 4k, but my boost has gone from 40-50% red to 60-70% red, and even with taper stays in the redzone well into the higher revs. (Details are still sketchy; it's still new, there have been very few chances to test, and I'm too busy yelling with delight.) Once I get the pots tweaked properly, I'll be sorely tempted to find a dyno and compare the tweaked redbox with the rewired stock SPG box.

All in all, I post to say "Thank you" to Kevin K, Tweaker and the others who discussed the issue in substance and depth.

Now, I suspect the SPG9 box may be even better; I'm not hitting the overpressure cutout yet (more P tweaking ahead!), but this is good enough to keep me happy for quite a while. It is also worth emphasizing that my car is in good shape generally, and that I also did the underlying foundation to support this first(K&N, AID, 3.0 fpr, exhaust upgrade). Without replacing the tranny pinion bearing, I'm not sure I want to run much more power through the gearbox.

Good roads to all.
