I got my US spec 99 9-3 base model ECU upgraded by Hirsch Performance on Tuesday. What an awesome transformation it gave the engine. I had a small scare when I first got there however. They told me that they did not have a program for OBDII cars. The Euro spec cars are not yet OBDII compliant and have only one O2 sensor instead of the US models two. The engineer did decide though that he was very confident he could develope a program for my car.

He first did an initial base line dyno run. My car has a Saab sport exhaust, modified airbox, k&n filter, removed turbo dischage silencer, and modded throttle body transition casting. It dynoed at 192 hp and around 270 nm of torque.

He then started on the new chip and programming. He spent around 4 hours making a program and dynoing to test it. After to numerous tests to remember the actual number he finally had gotten the best solution. During the tests he managed to clock 30+ miles and uses a half tank of gas from my car on the dyno. The end results came out to 227 hp at 5520 rpm. Torque wound up at 326 Nm at 3210 rpm. He got these results at 0.9 bar or right about 13 psi.

I love the extra power my engine now has. I did run a mbc earlier and I have to say that the car does feel a bit stronger with the ECU upgrade than it did on the mbc. Also, it doesn't have the annoying drop off of boost pressure that the mbs demonstrated. Overall it was quite an experiance for me to watch the engineer at work. The Hirsch Performance guys treated me great and they were very impressive with their knowledge of the cars and their products which have some of the best quality I have personally ever seen. They were very professional as well, and very informative and friendly as well.
