C900/9K, AID, BTM, gap, dawes relief valve Posted by Kevin K [Email] (#374) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Kevin K) on Thu, 4 Oct 2001 16:27:11 In Reply to: Kevin K - relief valve theory, Vince T, Thu, 4 Oct 2001 15:43:27 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
simple gap game :
stock actuator kicks all retard in by about 4 psi of boost. stock initial 16V-T timing is 16 deg at idle, and 10 or 11 when boost exceeds 4 psi. cheap mod to get more initial addvance (premium fuel only) is just move the stop to open the gap a bit more. so u just need some more gap to get from 13 to 10 deg's at boost levels above 4-5 psi.
before u change it, determine whether 9, 10, or 11 deg is best at high power. example, if u have 20/13 now as stated, adjust idle timing to 17 to see how 10 deg is at high boost/load. say u like 20 at idle, and 10 with boost best (20/10). You need 3 more deg from gap setting. pull act, meas gap, and increase by (20-10)/(20-13)=> 43% more gap. check at idle with false boost from a hand pump.
AID, BTM, Dawes-relief:
Dawes Relief is only for AID, and high boosters with MSD BTM , unit. These give better low rpm performance, vs gap game, since retard is slowly and progressively kicked in. But AID kicks in too much (16 deg change), and MSD will not retard enough at low end if set for say 10 deg BTDC at 24 psi ..
Relief is used to limit the retard kick from each of these, by limiting the pressure signal to each device. With 19 deg idle timing, set dawes to relieve pressure (ie stop retard action) to about 9 psi for AID, and 10-15 deg for MSD depending on gain.
