I am in the process of going through the air box modification and installing a K&N filter on my 1994 Aero. Here are some comments re your questions.
1. Removal of the air box - you can access the inner fender portion of the air box by removing the left side portion of the underbody panel under the front portion of the engine compartment (held on by about 8-10 10mm bolts.
Once this is removed you can then reach up and release the 4 spring clips which hold the outer portion (the portion in the inner fender area) of the air box. Once this is detached you should then be able to remove the remaining portion of the air box from the engine compartment.
2. Location of the new filter - you may want to take a look at the posting by JVD, titled "Air Box Mod, I got pictures & questions", dated Nove 15th, on the Performance Bulletin Board. JVD has some excellent pictures of his K&N installation in the inner fender area. The benefit of this installation is that you would access cooler air than by installing the filter in the actual engine compartment.
