Before we were married, she was going on a field assignment and would be driving a Toyota pickup with manual. We owned no car at that time, so I had to teach her on "dry land", with her sitting in a chair, practicing the motions with her feet, etc. I visited her a week later and she did OK, although a bit sudden with letting the clutch out and killed it often.

It took her awhile to get over the habit of shifting it into first before slowing down enough. I guess she wanted to be ready in first gear when the light changed. Finally, I told her she should wait to shift to first until the car is going as slowly as a baby crawling. That worked. Later, I learned it was best to leave it in neutral at the light, so I changed but she didn't. However, I just replaced the clutch in her old car after 160K miles.

Now, when we're selecting a car, she insists on a manual! :-)
