As to the kids at the University of Washington driving Civics, at least they are in college and driving reliable, affordable, but fun to drive cars. I love driving my Saab, but I still have a blast in my base 91 Civic. And don't get me started on my Integra GS-R. They're great cars and we need to be thankful they exist.
As to Saabs being around, they seem to be more regional. I hardly ever saw a Saab when I lived in Alabama or West Texas. I see a lot of them in my home state of Virginia. And they are not as common in Germany as I thought, but I admit I don't look at Mercedes and BMW in the same light anymore. They are good cars, but they only sell the "top end" cars in the US. And Saabs are thought of as a little different in Germany.
Since this is the performance forum, I agree with the Autoweek Buyer's Guide assessment of the 9-3. They call it a rocket, and that it is. My Saab thrives on the autobahn, and gets decent economy as long as I keep it under 130 MPH. Plus I can cruise at 150 MPH with 4 adults, a kid, and luggage, traffic permitting and I choose to keep it near redline. Which I usually don't.
