I have used KYBs on a number of the cars I've had including a Porsche 924S, Merkur Scorpio and an '86 9K. They seem to have the right stiffness for me (but do get a bit stiff in the extreme cold) and the price isn't bad. I've used Konis on a VW Golf and an Audi Quattro and was able to dial them in just perfect. You just have to make sure on struts that you get those that are adjustable on the car and on those that aren't, try and make a good guess on the setting or be prepared to mess around taking them back off to tweak the settings. I've had Bilsteins on a SAAB 99 and a LR Discovery and found them to be a bit firmer than KYBs but real stiff in the cold. And for the price, I'm not convinced that they are much better than KYBs.
In the end driving styles and the opinion of what firm or comfort is is pretty subjective. You can ask folks what they think and even if its a direct match of car and shock to what you are thinking about, its still a crap shoot as to whether its what you are after. The only real way is to try and find somebody's car that has a setup and try it out.
