ala the old Batman show (ChrisX might understand). ;)
It certainly LOOKS better in the engine compartment IMO, which as we all know, affects performance. 5 hp, no doubt. From an air filter! Ha!
The improved SOUND is also very important to performance. I can hear my blow off valve! I love those atmospheric dumpers that people get just for the sound. Smoked a bright yellow turbocharged Corrado (full package!! looks and sound!) the other day. Heard his lovely dumper dumpin' like nobody's business from my car. Oh it was helpin him! :) Someone posted something on the general BB a while back about a device you can install that makes the blow off sound, with no turbo on your car. Holy crap! $300! double HA! Please hold for.... HA!
Ok, seriously. The open filter has made a difference in my car. You've gotta keep it clean, though. Also, the inbetween-the-fender-walls-install has been popular here. I would like to cut a big hole in a Saab hood and install a NACA duct right over the filter. Perhaps I will do this soon and see how it goes. Lots of hoods lying around... :) Main problem there is water intake, but some NACA ducts have baffles built in. (ala Ram Air from GTOs) There's always AEM's filter as well (which they fixed).
Someone also stated once that the stock Saab air intake system makes 9 (or more?) 90 degree turns before the throttle! Dang.
