"Support OPEC-Buy an SUV" Posted by bryan [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: DOWN WITH RESOURCE SQUANDERING BEHEMOTHS, Dave W, Fri, 15 Mar 2002 14:24:49 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I'm a little sensitive to this as well, having just returned from a 750 mile round trip from San Diego to Vegas. MY GOD, you would think Southern Californian's were the most offroadin'est buncha cowboys in the country, all you SEE are trucks and SUV's. Wouldn't be so bad if they drove like someone else on the planet existed.
That's my beef with SUV's. They are wasteful and irresponsible as a daily driver. I think they highlight perfectly our uniquely American attitude of "i'll do WTF I want, the rest of the world be damned". We have 8% of the planets population in the US, yet we consume over 40% of the worlds resources. Basically our response to any type of legislation (thinking of Kyoto in particular, domestic energy bill secondarily) that would force us to begin to act responsibly is given the middle finger by the Oilman In Chief.
BTW, according to our own USGS, if we drain all the oil in the ANWR (fortunately that was just shot down) it would be enough to power the country for anywhere from about 7 mos. to 2 years. Not exactly a long term solution eh?
And our fearless leaders just caved in to the automotive lobby on increasing the avg. MPG for trucks and SUV's. I guess the link between being beholden to Middle Eastern despots with oil and our DEPENDENCY on that isn't really a top priority. It makes MUCH more sense to run ads that say if you smoke a joint, you're supporting terrorists. BTW, has anybody SEEN those? I was laughing unctrollably until I figured out they were for REAL and not some kind of spoof. Does the Bush Admin. really believe they can distill EVERY problem into a terror issue?
In Orwell's "1984", the people were kept compliant by a constant war fighting a far off and vague enemy.......
