Vince,
your 88 is set up for an internal centering spring, inside the tranny. The 4 speed needs an external spring which is found on the floor under the black plastic floor vent. You need too get the parts from a mid 86 or older ignition for the arms that the spring balances. Once you have that together and a new spring, turn the shifter side to side looking through the pilot hole on the front of the ignition housing. You will see a hole in the shaft, grab a thin punch or allen wrench and pin the two together.
now you have set reverse on the shifter. When you go to put everything back together, make sure the gearbox is in reverse which is opposite from sitting in the car. In the car it is to the right and back so on the box it's to the left and forward.
once everything is bolted in, take out the punch @ the ignition and everything should be centered.
Make sure to use a new spring when doing this, nothing sucks more than taking everything apart inside for a stupid 99 cent spring.
good luck,
Alex
