You raise some interesting ideas. You're right that there would be more total mass of air in the exhaust header, but I'm going to have to try your experiments before I'm convinced that helps, when the downstream pressure is also high. It seems to me (and i'm no physics student) that if the restriciton is not imposed by the turbo itself (ie: exhaust system downstream, or tapered tube in your example) the pressure differential would be lower. However, it would also make sense that increased exhaust density would have an increased ability to spin the turbine (just as water turbines are more efficeient than pnumatic ones, such as our turbos).

I had always considered the problem with more lag from a bigger turbo was created by the aditional weight in the rotating mass, especially the weight at the outer edge of the turbines, which takes time to change speed.
