In a factory engine, you can change to synthetic the day you bring it home.
I usually recommend that the owner run a minimum of 1500 miles, or until the first oil drain, just to make sure everything was put together properly.
In a rebuilt engine, run non-synthetic until you are satisfied that the rings are seated, or you might get some blow-by for a considerable time until they do seat.
In remanufactured, run 1000-3000 and then change. I bought a Jasper for my Dodge van. Specified first oil change at 500 miles. Talked to folks at Jasper, and dropped AMSOIL in it at 500. Doing fine.
