Hey everyone!
I dropped off my 1990 SPG at Lititz SAAB (Lititz, PA) today to have their Lightened Flywheel & Zimmerman Cross-Drilled Front Brake Rotors installed. The cross-drilled brakes work great. If you're interested in upgrading your c900 stock rotors, go Zimmerman, and buy them through Lititz SAAB. I paid $105(tax included) for the front rotors. This post isn't about the brakes... it's about the lightened flywheel.. keep reading ( :
Lititz SAAB removed the flywheel, machined it down/balanced it, and reinstalled it for just a little more than $100. I asked them to lighten the flywheel as much as possible while still keeping the car "streetable". They lightened the flywheel 11 lbs.
After they took off my flywheel, they saw my clutch was shot, so I had the clutch replaced as well. They also removed my EGR system, which is not necessary to keep on anyway.
Lightened Flywheel Results:
One word: WOW! It takes me 20 minutes of driving to get from my house to Lititz SAAB. After picking up my SPG, on the way back, I got to test out the flywheel. Results were more than expected! Throttle response is amazing. Step on the gas pedal, and the engine responds like it never did before. Turbo lag is greatly decreased because the RPMs climb faster. The best of both worlds. Overall horsepower and faster spool up! I also got to encounter some bumper to bumper city driving. The comfort of a stock flywheel stays the same. It's actually easier to engage into gears, especially when downshifting. No problems in 1st gear as many say to expect. I was told to expect to stall when I first tried to pull away from the lot. Even with the brand new clutch, and it's getting used to, the lightened flywheel doesn't hurt 1st gear engagment at all!
Swedish Dynamics says about lightened flywheels, "This is a modification that has no negative side effects...idle quality, clutch activity, mileage/fuel economy, etc. are all held intact yet you reap the reward of a 100% lighter assembly than OEM and a performance factor impossible to miss!"
Marc Fails (CPSC President) had Lititz SAAB perform the same work to his c900. He said he calculated about 1 HP/1 lbs removed from the flywheel, and that was in his Naturally Aspirated 900S! With a 900T/SPG the gain is surely much more. If the straight all-around horsepower isn't enough, the turbo lag decreases too! I'm thinking... by feel, 10-15 HP? I hate to make claims, but these were some "neck snapping" results, as Swedish Dynamics says.
I wish I would have done this sooner! The dollar to HP ratio here is incredible. I recommend this modification to everyone looking for some more HP and/or to help reduce turbo lag in their c900.
Considering the only other option here is Swedish Dynamics $560 aluminum flywheel, I think Lititz's version is the way to go. I know many people have experienced great results with Swedish Dynamics version, and the same results are given with Lititz's, just not as extreme.
I told the guys at Lititz that I was sure some other c900 S/T/SPG owners would be very interested in this modification. I told them easily 10 c900 owners would jump on this. With a price of just slightly over $100 to remove/modify/reinstall the flywheel, the unit alone, without any labor, would be cheaper. The technician who did the work told me he has 10 flywheels at his house, and he's going to start lightening them all 11 lbs. I'm calling them tomorrow to get some final prices, so I can pass along the information to some friends. They will probably make up a set price once he's all done with the 10 flywheels, and may or may not ask for a core return of your stock flywheel. If anyone is interested, drop me an email. I can contact them one time with a list of the people here who would be serious about buying a lightened flywheel from them, and take care of it all at once. As of right now, they only do the c900's. I'm sure they could do 99/9-3/9-5/9000/etc, but they didn't say anything about it.
