I think this will work seamlessly...the manual for the 9000 Trionic system covers the years 1996-1998 and there is no mention of any changes year-by-year. Even if you have one car automatic and one car 5-speed, the ECM is supposed to tell by a certain pin # being grounded or not.

Not only that, but the pre-96 9000's have virtually the same ECM (saab-speak for electronic control module) just with a couple different pinouts for the emissions-control equipment i.e., OBD-II. Other OBD-II changes include some gold-plated connector pins, secondary O2 sensor, more CEL codes for emissions stuff, etc.

Sort of the same thing:
I used a 1996 9000 Aero ECM in my 1998 900SE a couple months ago, with limited success. I had great power in 1st and 2nd gears, but only basic boost in 3/4/5th gears, which I attribute to a mismatch of gearing between the two cars (the T5 calculates what gear you are in from roadspeed vs. rpms, and delivers the appropriate boost/power level). It also triggered a CEL eventually due to (I think) the mismatch of emissions equipment ('96 9000 has evap canister purge valve check, '98 900 has gas tank pressure check on same pin)
