Vince is right. Forged pistons will always be far lighter for a given strength, or far stronger at the same weight. My 91.87 mm forged Cosworth pistons (got the psitons, modified block w/ piston cooling oil jets and shotpeened rods yesterday -woo hoo!!) are all weighed in at 481.5 g, and those are designed to cope with 5-600 hp from a 2 litre 'four' in extreme motorsport applications.

As far as whether you need them - if you are going to stick within the stock size range (90 - 91 mm) you are running APC and are 100% sure APC function is 100% of with it is from the factory (not a given - crank APC boost up high enough and the airflow restrictions in the system might be enough to prevent it from cutting back boost to the basic level fast wnough to avoid pre-det damage), yuou will probably be fine with the cast Mahles. I decided, after fooling around with two sets of 93 mm cast Mahles that were adapted from another application and supplied by Gasparatos, that the few hundreds extra spent on the real deal (Eklund uses the same pisotns in his rallycross beasts) were cheap insurance in the grand scheme of things. Don't want to have to tear up my engine ever again in this car.

Happy Saabing,
Eric
