Just FYI, here's the response I got from Hirsch when I inquired about their "Step 3" upgrade to '01 Aero. I basically wanted to get some reasoning behind the extremely high (my opinion) price.
"Thank you very much for your interest in our SAAB performance products. You are asking for the difference between our 310 HP kit towards Maptun's 304 HP I suppose.
Well, to be honest I dont know for personal experience the Maptun kit but surely I know very well the SAAB engine and it's characteristics. Therefore I can assure you that it is phisically impossible to reach 300 or more horsepower with the standard intercooler and the Mitsubishi TD04 charger (even modified) not to talk about 450 or more Nm torque. You can calculate that the maximum output of the engine can only be as high as the airflow capability of the turbocharger. The TD04 can not handle more than 206-7 g/sec even in the best peripheric conditions (means approx. 206-7 kW).
About our Step 3 it's for sure expensive, but we deliver a lot of parts considering even a complete new turbocharger and a high gloss polished stainless steel exhaust system with 300 cpsi catalyst. Another big difference that I cannot forget to remind is that all our kit's fulfill the european EURO 4 emission limits and have therefore the homologation for Europe. I understand that this is not an important fact for you in the US but still remarks that we develop (and test) parts for "legal" street use. The use of a 100 cpsi catalyst signalise to me a "race" part not foresee to be used on public roads and I also dont think that any part of the maptun kit has whatsoever kind of homologation.
As said, this homologation stuff is not an argument for you cause both (we and maptun) are not homologated in the US but it still makes a difference in the price level here. Our parts are legal from emissions, noise, fuel consumption and last but not least in power output measured on an engine bench verified by the authorities.
I hope my explanations are answering your question."
