I have used synthetic oils from way back in the CAM2 days (late '70's). Prior to that it was Castrol GTX. I have had great luck with Mobil1 in eleven different cars and trucks. The only car that I used Redline oil in was my BMW - and I had zero motor/lubrication related problems. Because these are not controlled experiments, my opinions are anecdotal at best.

It is worth noting that the new blends of synthetic oil from Mobil1 provide a wide range of viscosities - some of which are formulated for high mileage engines (that are charactrized by increased ring clearances and bearing "slop"). It seems to me that the critica factor in oil choice would be to avoid very low viscosity oils (5W/30 or 0W/30) which work so well in newer motors. Frequent oil changes (3-5K) would also seem appropriate as the oil is likely to be more contaminated by combustion gases tha will leak past the the piston rings.
