If you can pull the engine yourself, that will save you even more AND you'll have to find an engine builder who won't do BS job. If you find one, I would (based on my experiences) attempt to talk with people the builder has built engines for in the past. One thing for sure, I would ask the builder to look around his shop. Is it dirty and disorganized?? Engine building, although a "blue collar" type job, still requires cleanliness in the work area. What is the experience of the builder's employees, especially with Saabs.
Now, I would have the block dipped so it was thoroughly clean. It should be part of any rebuild, especially for hi-po applications.
I had mine bored .040" over. Forged pistons for the turbo from Arias ran about $500.00. I know some guys have gone with forged rods. I didn't, but mine were allegedly shot peened and magna-fluxed (or stress relieved).
Everything that moves should be balanced, that should be part of the rebuild.
An aluminum flywheel will run around $500.
The crank should be checked and cleaned up if necessary (part of rebuild). Some guys have "knife edged" the crank. That would be extra, not sure of cost.
The Head will cost some $$. Around $1600-1800. To me, this is an extremely important mod. All ports should be port matched with their manifolds. LESCO did a great job for me. I would use them. Also, they can modify your cams.
If you're running 15-20 psi, or more, you want a balanced and well built engine that can tolerate these pressures over a long time, while still being pleasant to drive.
Obviously, lots of nick-nat crap should be replaced as you get in to the motor...water pump, oil pump, harmonic balancer, etc.
What's the stat on the turbo....original?? This would be the time to have it modified: T3/T4 or T4/T3 hybrid type. Cost, about $600.
I know, the stuff goes on and on, but if you're going to keep the car, make the bottom end bullet proof, and the top end capable of flowing air.
I had my intake manifold Extrude Honed....$450.
Be real careful on who builds your engine. I got ripped off big time by PAECO in Birmingham....total trash job. Ended up getting a used block and head and doing all over. Total incompetence. LESCO can do engine as well. Not sure where you live, but if you can get them the engine, they will do you right. Ask Gary Moore on this sight, they did an engine for him, and probably someone else. I wish I had known of them before I shelled out $$$ to PAECO.
