Dan,
Basically it works like this: the ECU has a microprocessor in it that processes information digitally (duh!). To get the sensor values into the micro, a chip called an "A-to-D converter" (that's "a" as in "analog" and "d" as in "digital") is used. Sometimes the A-D function is built into the microprocessor, but the concept is the same.
Anyhow, the A-D chip has designed-in limits on the range of voltage it can accept at its inputs. With most A-D's used in cars, the range goes from 0 to the supply voltage of the chip, which is usually 5 volts.
So bottom line is if you want to go above 5 volts, you're pretty much out of luck.
