'00 Airbox and Forge valve

It warmed up briefly today, so I took the opportunity to finally mount my Forge valve in the 'opposite' orientation to the Bosch valve. From a post a few weeks ago, many of you may remember that I was able to quantitate that the boost spooled up about 200 ms faster on shifts with the piston facing the pressurized manifold.
I also poked around the airbox a bit. It is very different than the 99 and earlier cars that had a 2 inch 'trumpet' at the front of the airbox. The '00 has a 3 inch pipe that comes out and then curves down and then back into an additional airbox. That airbox (mounted in the fender well) then has a 3 inch flex pipe with a trumpet on the end that comes out and goes further into the fender well. I'm guessing this 'other' airbox is some kind of noise muffler and can be dispensed with. The 3 inch pipe that comes out of the normal airbox is well positioned for cool air intake.
Q: Anybody removed this extra air box ? Any untoward effects ? I know the '00 airbox has the mass air flow meter right on it and I wonder if the extra airbox is to damp out some kind of airflow oscillations ?
