Tire removal

Has anybody ever tried to remove a tire from a rim with out the proper equipment? I thought I could do it if I sacrificed the tire, which is worn out any way, but chopping, sawing and prying haven't gotten it off yet. Is there anything I should know or try? At this point I'd prefer not to take to a tire shop out of pure embarassment for how it looks at this point....
TIA Chad
