I can see exactly where you're headed with this car. It's going to
cost you at least $1500 to get you where you should be before you
even consider the stage 3 ECM. First, you should replace the
intercooler. The stock unit is very restrictive, experiences more
than a marginal amount of of pressure loss through it, and with
the plastic endtanks is only good for 19-20 psi - a stage 3 ECM
will surely give boost pressures in the low 20's. A thicker all-
aluminum intercooler will not only give you higher boost pressures,
but will also lower the charge intake air, and correspondingly, lower
EGT's too. Second, I'd put an uprated Sachs pressure plate. The
stock PP is the weak-link when adding performance/torque. So,
a new IC, new clutch and pressure plate, those will be pretty close
to $1500 without the labor to install them. Only after those items
have been added would I think about producing more heat/power -
remember, heat and work are interchangeable! Buying a new
muffler will only marginally decrease back-pressure from what now
exists. Your engine would enjoy the bigger intercooler, more so
than a new muffler, in keeping its' heat at a more reasonable level.
