I went through that a while ago...

'85 has smaller CC volume - 42cc vs. 46cc on later heads. Why? Because the 1985 16v motors were nothing more than 8v (B201) bottom ends with a 16v head. They used the same 8.5:1 pistons, so they had to shrink the CC size to achieve the 9:1 CR. '85 also had symmetrical intake ports and used offset cam lobes for swirl.

'86 has normal sized CC, and symmetrical intake ports and used offset cam lobes for swirl.

'87-'93 are all the same, and have different sized intake ports to induce swirl instead of offset cam lobes.

B212/B234 heads are pretty much identical in that they have larger intake ports and larger CCs - 48cc instead of B202's 46cc. I do not know offhand whether they have symmetrical intake ports or asymmetrical ones, and I'm too lazy to go look in the garage. I *assume* they are assymetrical, like the later B202 heads.

So, in *theory* the best setup for power would be an '86 head with '87+ cams. You get no "swirl" that way, but it should be optimized for flow. You do not want an '85 head or you'll increase your static compression ratio. Dave at SPG9 is pushing the '85/'86 head design (ported, polished, etc.) but I don't know how he deals with the smaller displacement on '85 heads, or if he does.

Using the B234 or B212 head will drop your compression ratio, and you'll have different sized intake ports. That can be fixed with some porting, of course. The *intake manifold* from a B212 has larger intake runners than the B202 version, and probably should be used.

On the bottom end, there are a couple major "steps:"

7.2:1 non-APC B20/B201 pistons. Combined with an '86+ head, you'd have SERIOUSLY low compression using these pistons.

8.5:1 APC B201 pistons. Combined with an '86+ head, you'd have 8.2:1 CR if memory serves, which it may not. These pistons are also in use on '85 B202 cars.

9:1 APC B202 pistons. Duh.

9.25:1 B204/B234/etc pistons. These motors ran 9.25:1 instead of the earlier 9:1 CR. I *believe* this excludes the '91/'92 9000T models. They also had a larger CC volume, so combining these pistons with an earlier head should net you really high compression (which I'm too lazy to calculate). Alternatively, you could use these pistons with a B234/B212 head avoid lowering your CR.

Then there's all of the NA pistons, which nobody probably cares about.

I believe all this info is right... lemme know if someone finds any errors.
