I'm not completely convinced. Everyone says you can get idle/light load maps are easy to replicate from OE ECU settings, but all who have done it report driveability problems all the same. Seems like a waste throwing away the 95% of points in the fuel map where the OE set up is correct, because you need more fuel on the remaining 5% of driving situations than OE can deliver. Cost-wise it's not the price of the stand alone hardware I'm concerned about, but extended dyno sessions and professional on-site support in dialing in the system can get -very- expensive. The Saab racing/tuning outfit I work with (Sweedspeed, The Netherlands - very impressive) quotes about $4,500 for putting a Saab on stand alone (they have a 2.0 litre 9000 endurance racing car on Weber Alpha management putting out 520 hp!). For ignition, they can bolt a Trionic crank sensor wheel to my 900 pulley which enables me to run a custom programmed DI box - so I'll be sorted on that front. I do a limited mileage on my Saab and need the engine management to be pretty much 'plug and play' - don't want to speand another year or two sorting it all out as both the car and I aren't getting any younger, and we want a piece of the track/Saab meet/show action soon! :-)
As the bolt-on DI set up from Sweedspeed incorporates the Trionic crank sensor stuff, I briefly thought about going the whole hog and installing Trionic 5 - would save me from sorting the disintegrating LH wiring harness... But talking with Damien, it seems that T5 doesn't adapt too well to things like aggressive camshafts (Damien used to run the same G6-spec ones as I do, hand had to put the stockers back in) and thus I'd have to drive to Sweden with a not-too-well driving car to have it reprogrammed by Map Tun (they told Damien they could do an 'approximate' job if he sends the exact spec of the pistons/static CR, head porting, camshafts, turbo, etc...) whilst the LH I'm running now can be reprogrammed right here on the dyno. And where I'm running out of possibilities with the LH and 34 lbs 9000 2.3 injectors, there's always the 5th injector system to fill in the voids...
