...made by BSR, the same people that do the APC trims for Speedparts. The idea of "matching" the chip for APC is a good one, but on the other hand there really isn't much to match.

The fuel ECU simply sees the amount of air flowing into the engine. It does not know the boost it is running. The important thing is that the fuel ECU will have to "recognize" the amount of air flow, i.e. it will have to be listed in the memory of the ECU so that it will find the relevant amount of fuel to be injected. If the boost is sky high there will be a tremendous flow of air and it is possible that the ECU does not "understand" that there can be that much air flowing and will not behave correctly, i.e. go to limp home mode and ignore the air flow measurements. This could very well have dramatical results!

I have a good example of that behavior in my '90 T16 with Lucas injection (european speciality). If I disconnect the battery so that the ECU resets itself and go for a hard run with WOT the engine will perform pretty nicely but after holding the boost at beyond 15PSI for a few moments the ECU will light up the "Check engine" light. This is because the unit has not had time to adapt yet and it just can't believe it is seeing reasonable air flow measurements. But if you take it easy on the car for the first 10 miles or so, the ECU will be perfectly happy with the high boost at WOT.

I do not believe it is possible to program a chip so that the injection mapping curve would go further than it does from the factory (i.e. originally programmed by Bosch). But that should suffice for most of us. What is done when programming the chip is fine-tuning of the air/fuel ratio maps so that the injectors will be open longer at a given airflow rate than standard -> richer mixture.

As far as I know BSR has only a single version of chip available so no special adaptations for bigger injectors, new ic or things like that. That may well have changed now as they couldn't even raise the RPM limiter some time ago either. Also can't say for sure that Speedparts is still buying from BST but there really aren't many alternatives.

I have had a chip in my Lucas system for three years now. It does give more fuel and works fine with standard injectors and standard 3.0bar fpr (in Lucas) at 17PSI boost. Honestly the only real gain from the chip is that it makes it possible to dial in more boost. Really no change in behavior if the boost is not touched at the same time.

No problems with the emissions either. In fact my chip did cure one thing: it helps to prevent the engine stalling in odd conditions such as quickly pressing in clutch from high boost (a typical fault with Lucas is that the engine could stall)
