You can do anything, it just depends on how much time you want to devote to doing this project. If you are going to go this route look at the aero and viggen tranny. These cars essentially have the same gear ratio's as our cars with the exception on the third and fifth gear.

These numbers are a comparison between the 2000 viggen and the 97 set
97 set 2000 viggen
1-3.38:1 1-3.38:1
2-1.76:1 2-1.76:1
3-1.12:1* 3-1.18:1
4-0.89:1 4-0.89:1
5-0.70:1 5-0.66:1*
FD-3.82:1 FD-4.05:1

From what I can tell, and I hope doing this correctly, the ng has a slight advantage over the viggen in third gear. This slight advantage then goes in favor of the viggen in fifth gear. How much of a real advantage is this, I don't know.

I've also done some research on upgraded trannys. If you want one from SQR(the only supplier) your going to have to pay a big $$$ for it and big $$$ for shipping it over here. I believe a better solution is to cyro it for additional cost of $200-300. Freezing it will increase the strength of it and allow for the tranny to be used longer then the previous one.

Not sure about your time frame but have you also thougth about buying a used tranny and rebuilding it? I have all the directions here if you need them out of the Saab manual.
