I just got through with that task. Cleaned them by tearing them down and soaking in kerosene for a couple days, then went after them with a good wire brush- the $10 brush from eEurosport was the best of the 3 different ones I had- get 2 of them. This got the big chunkies of brake, grease and rust off (with a good amount of elbow grease). I finished cleaning them up with a Dremel using the wire wheel attachment- used 3 wheels ($15). Them I used some rust inhibitor.

As far as painting, I had bought some VHT brand paint (good to 950F) special order. Seemed to go on well, but when I baked them, the paint bubbled. The VHT paint kit included the paint, 2 brushes, brake cleaner and rust remover/inhibitor for $30 plus shipping. Waste of money. Buy the components separately. The day before I had used some Dupli-color high temp ceramic paint (good to 1200F) on the new rotors on the cheap from Walmart (<$4). This worked MUCH better. It went on smoother, dried better, didn't bubble and looks better.

Replacing the seal kits cost about $60.

Total time: 10 Hours

Good luck!

If this seems like too much time, I ran across new GM metric calipers in the Behrent's catalog for about $35 each. eEuroparts has rebuilt rears for $45 each. Based on the amount of scubbing I did, hindsight proves this may be a better option if you have less time than money! Plus you won't need rust inhibitor, or seal kits. Just take them apart, tape, paint and put them together again.
