Just for fun, I calculated whether the stock panel filter is able provide the maximum airflow required for the Saab 2.0L turbocharged engine. This assesses the filter element itself, not the remainder of the intake plumbing.

First we need to know the theoretical CFM for the engine at say 6000RPM.

Theoretical CFM = RPM x Displacement / 3456

For the 2.0L engine: 6000RPM x 122 cu. in. (2.0L) / 3456 = 211.8 CFM

However, since the Saab intake manifold is under boost (and therefore the intake air is compressed) the volume of air needed at the air filter will be larger than the volume at the intake manifold. By making some conservative assumptions we can calculate the volume needed at the air filter.

Assume the intake is at 15 PSI (1 atm) above standard atmospheric pressure and has a temperature rise of rise of 40C above the outside air. Then using a calculator we can find the volume at standard atmospheric pressure (1 atm) and standard temperature (0C).

For the 2.0L engine: 211.8 CFM @ 15PSI = 369.7 CFM

The panel filter size for the NG900 is the K&N #33-2663 (10.94 x 6.25 x 1.19 thick) which is slightly wider than the K&N #33-2166 (10.94 x 6.13 x 1.13 thick) recommended for the 9-3. The area for both these filters is approx. 68 Sq. inches.
By multiplying the panel filter area by the flow rates for different filter types as measured in http://www.fordmuscle.com/archives/2000/01/airfilters/index.shtml, we can calculate the maximum flow rate of each type of filter (paper, oiled gauze, and oiled foam).

Paper filter flow rate per sq.in. (5.99 CFM) x 68 sq. in = 407.3 CFM
Oiled gauze filter flow rate per sq.in. (6.32 CFM) x 68 sq. in = 429.8 CFM
Oiled foam filter flow rate per sq.in. (5.86 CFM) x 68 sq. in = 398.5 CFM

So each type of drop-in panel filter can flow enough air to meet the needs of the engine at maximum RPM (assuming of course that the rest of the intake system has minimal restrictions).
