Prroblem is, that the obvious tuning solutions for turbocharged engines all involve gobs of low/midrange torque, and not that much gain at the top end (because then the restrictions of intake/exhaust/turbo/IC etc. and the limit of how high the engine can be revved) come to play. This is what kills the trans. But if you're building a car for autox, twisty back roads or track days, you will want a low-inertia, high revving engine with power progressively building towards the redline anyways for reasons of driveability (particularly on an FWD car). So the lower torque capability of the c900 gearbox is not so much of an issue, particularly because the older car weighs about 150-250 kgs less than a late 2.3 9000.
The other side of the coin is that a seriously sorted classic 900 (like Vince T's Damiens or -porentially- my car) will cost a lot more to build than a hot 9000 and will lose out on outright hp and day-to-day refinement (noise, ride, creature comforts).
