longer gearing will subject the gearbox to more torque load in each gear. i'm running a gearbox from a 91 900s in my spg and am quite happy with the results, it's not quite as long as the mid-late 80's turbo ratios (your 89 spg has the same overall gearing as a 9000 aero!) but it's not as short as the 91-93 turbo gearboxes either (which are the same overall ratios as the early 80's turbo 'boxes)
i use a 93 turbo 'box in my rally car and the gearing is noticeably shorter: in my stock 89 spg 55mph in 5th gear turns 2000rpm, in my rallycar 55mph in 5th gear turns 2800rpm! quite a difference. i'll have to check again with my 88spg that's using the 91 900s 'box, but i think it's around 2400rpm.
here's where it gets interesting. the 93 turbo 'box has the shortest ratios, but the longest drop-chain ratios! 32-25 primaries. i don't remember what i used in the 91 900s 'box, but i believe the 89 spg has those same primaries.
hmmmm... now i'll have to start digging through my info again and sort all this out. i've been meaning to get my hands on another late turbo 'box and put the 31-30's in it. should be the 'box setup for a n/a car looking for quick gearing. should also be useful in rallying.
