What the best way to paint wheels?

I'm getting a set of classic mesh wheels for a pre 87 900. The outside is sliver and the mesh is gold. I plan on painting the mesh black. I am going to do the the work myself and sanding/sandblasting is out of the question. Can I just mask them, clean them, hit them with lacquer thinner and they spray them with krylon? I don't plan on clear coating, and these will be summer only wheels.
TIA,
Chad
