Hey MG -

I've used all kinds of combinations on my '86 SPG.

My advice for your current setup is to get a slotted rotor (my fav's are ATE or Brembo) and the SS brake lines and some good pads. I have had good luck with the KVR's mentioned, and have no experience with the EBC or MetalMasters (from what I have read, both of those have spotty reputations). Unfortunately, there are not many pad choices for these calipers when you get in to track/performance stuff.

This is where the '91-98 9000 caliper comes in. Now you've got a larger pad (I'm guessing at least 30% larger), great selection of pad compounds (thanks to a lucky cross-reference w/ E30 M3 pads!), more clamping force (57mm vs 54mm pistons), and option to use slightly thicker 25mm 9000 rotors (vs. 23.5mm). The only drawback is that you end up with slightly more travel at the pedal due to the larger caliper pistons. I think that is totally worth all the benefits.

At my last track day, I used the following:

-- 9000 57mm brake calipers,
-- dust shields trimmed to fit,
-- c900 ATE powerslot rotors (23.5mm, slotted),
-- Ferodo DS3000 pads for M3,
-- SS brake lines,
-- Motul RBF 600.
This combo was extremely effective. The Ferodo pads were fantastic on-course and never faded one bit, although I got a soft brake pedal late in the day. Upon tear-down I found that the pads had some signs of overheating, so there are more changes for next time: 1) I’ll use a 25mm slotted rotor, 2) remove the brake dust shields completely, and 3) add brake cooling ducts. That will be just about every trick in the book to help an OEM system work like a racing system!
