I have been toying with the idea of using the HKS Super AFR to manipulate my a/f mixture in my 91 SPG. This "Magic Box" interfaces AMM, TPS, RPM and Injector cycle with the stock ECU. This allows a/f ratios to be adjusted +/- 50% of stock at 11 data points from 650-8000 RPM. It also features a self-learning idle control, adjustments to improve throttle response at various pts in the RPM band, and a feature that smooths drastic a/f swings (BOV on 2.4 for example). http://www.hksusa.com
I see three drawbacks:
1) Dyno tuning is not cheap.
2) Splicing into LH wiring harness sucks.
3) LH AMM runs out of metering capability at 2XXhp.
I can deal with 1 and 2, but 3 brings me to my point: Would it be possible to adapt an AMM from a different car that reads higher airflow rates via this box? Seemingly AMMs are pretty similar electronics-wise (i.e. X-wire supplies VCC, Y-wire powers the element, O-wire relays signal to ecm, etc.) Can anyone suggest a unit that works with similar parameters to LH 2.4? Presumably the signal voltage would have to be the same range (0-5V?), but otherwise many other units should be workable? I realize that a higher resolution AMM would confuse the idle, but the HKS box touts ability to control that. Any other issues? Will the car run closed loop when not at/near WOT? (pansy, yes, somtimes I am not flooring it) AMM output lower(?) than stock should not trigger CEL as long as the O2 sensor has its say, correct? Where can I find out about AMMs from other cars? I know 3KGT VR-4s and Supras employ them, but perhaps something a little closer to the vintage of my SAAB would be easier to adapt.
I have neither the time nor the place to adapt stand-alone to my car. I agree that it is hands down the best way to tune for significantly more power than stock. I am not equipped to be fitting crank sensors or re-wiring my engine bay- not to mention the TIME it takes to tune the beast properly.
Thank you for all your wisdom,
Andy
